Chapter One

MOTHER EARTH'S HUG

Once upon a time, on a lovely little blue-green planet, there lived a family of stones. They sat quietly day after day, alone in their own darkness.

Then, on a night a bit like this one, with a big moon lighting up the sky, a family of stars fell to the Earth - and finding the little stones kissed each one twice, Like this! (Smack! Smack!)

Now the star-kissed stones had two eyes of twinkling crystal to see not only the great beauty all around them, but themselves and each other as well!

The stones looked up and saw all the other stars moving across the sky and the moon disappearing into the sea. "Where has the moon gone? Why are the stars moving across the sky?"

The stars replied, "Now that you have eyes you'll see that all of the stars and planets are always moving. The moon goes around the Earth and the Earth goes around the Sun …

And you never fall off!"

No, we never fall off because our Mother, the Earth herself, holds us here. Every stone, every flower, every animal and person feels the great love of the Mother as she hugs all that is her own closely to her body. We are, each one of us, very precious to her.

Birds fly, winds blow, volcanoes throw rocks and lava high into the sky, but all things naturally return to her hug. The animals and the people are fed by the plants, the soft, green part of her body. The Sun, like a father, gives her the energy to grow the food we need. All things come from the Light of the sun and the Love of the Earth.

And so, as the sun came up, and the stars faded into the new day, the little stones with their new crystal eyes, felt happy and safe in the warm hug of their Mother, the Earth!
